32.4% or 75 million Americans Suffer with a Mental Disorder every year.*1

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2009 we had an estimated 307,006,550 people living in the U.S.A.

Compound that stat for a few years and include addictions...

Its Over half...That is a lot of people…suffering...

If you don’t think mental illness will impact your life, you’re sadly mistaken. If it doesn’t hit you, it’s going to hit someone you love or are close to.

Note: This article takes about 7 minute to read.

So…Why all the mental/substance issues/disorders?

It can’t be from a lack of information…Look at all the information available on the worldwide internet…

My name is Todd,

...And I'm about to DIRECT YOU TO EXPERIENCE the most profound andinfluential knowledge about human behavior known to man.

As “extreme" as that sounds, it is VERY true.  Pay close attention.

Here's the deal:

Most psychology methods today, (and the way most of us were raised as kids), are based in B. F Skinner’s behavior modification model.

Behaviorism works on the ‘outside’

...but what about the ‘inside’?

Skinner (picture above) was a Harvard PHD in the 1930’s that tested/studied animals and learned that animal/human behavior can be controlled under positive reinforcement (reward) is the strengthening of behavior…and negative reinforcement (punishment) is the strengthening of behavior by the removal or avoidance of some aversive event. (1)

“Punishment and Reward”

On the surface Punishment and Reward seem harmless and very effective for changing behaviors… Especially with children…so our parents generally used this "behavior modification model" to raise us into ‘functioning’ adults.

I am reminded of the Old Testament scripture I learned years ago back in my sunday school class…

”Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (3)

However, on a deeper level our parents ‘parenting’…and most traditional psychology may have been missing a key ingredient…

It’s called Self Actualization or Self Realization

I personally like the term 'Self Realization'…it's more 'REAL'...

Self Realization

Traditional Behavioral Psychology...

...and it's Effect on Us humans.

Self Realization (4) is a process where we get in touch with and are motivated/make choices from a deeper place within us verse being motivated to choice by punishment and reward.

Self Realization is experiential…it comes from a deeper knowing...

“I feel there are two people inside me - me and my intuition.

If I go against her, she'll screw me every time, and if I follow her, we get along quite nicely.”

Kim Basinger quotes (American Actress. b.1953, Athens, Georgia, USA)

Intuition comes from and is your True Power Source

Your True Core Values

(Not the values and motives of your childhood conditioning).

Intuition is also 'getting' some idea or concept on the deepest level…

Through Self Realization the ‘REASON’ OR ‘MOTIVE’ of why we do what we do comes from a deeper intrinsic place…deep inside…from this place we are motivated by who we are on a deeper level and not from outside our self.

Every choice and action that coming from this deeper place is 'right'….because it is who we are. Period!

With Intuition we are not acting

we are Being...

Parents who didn’t add this ingredient (self realization) to their behaviorism parenting style/method end up (by accident mostly) removing this deeper intrinsic motivation from their children with punishment or reward…causing… serious consequence which manifest in adulthood….57% of the time

(See the stats above).

…CREATING…The False Identity…

The affect of behaviorism on ‘who we are’ and ‘what we become’ is in creating a false identity…more robotic… reacting to being punished or rewarded outside of ourselves…

…we become very predictable just like animals…

…we become more susceptible to being controlled by others, etc.

Ring a bell and the dog salivates…(Pavlov’s Law) (5)

…except remember…

you’re not ringing the bell…someone else is…

…you only ‘THINK’ you are…

 NASTY childish HABITS…

Over time we learn habits that require us (compel us) to seek outside validation for almost every choice/action we make…(some Disorders, Addictions, Phobias, etc)

THESE seeming 'Choices' LACK true FREEDOM!

...we're In "The Mind Box" created by our double mind and being controled by our outside stimuli...

Yet because we are unaware we can’t see the outside control YET!

Did your parents/others use Reverse Psychology on you as a child/teen...?

When parents used reverse psychology in an attempt to influence us...they are using ‘reactance’ to manipulate us to their desired outcome.

Reverse Psychology creates behaviors that go against intuitive's a mind game against Self Realization-Intuition.

The 'reaction' that this causes is against what you feel on an intuitive level in an attempt to limit or influence your freedom of choice... want to do the 'polar opposite' of what is asked of you.

  Reverse Psychology is...

Using Subliminally Presented Stimuli

to get a predictable reaction...

Is it any wonder that some managers, lawyers, politicians, parents and figures of popular culture are example of people that use reactance communication psychology to influence their 'target' make"THE RIGHT CHOICES"...

This creates...

Polar Opposite thinking...

the belief that only two choices exist "right and wrong".

Sadly, Polar Opposite thinking eliminates choices/options the landmark sign of 'unconsciousness' in adulthood...seeing the world in terms of black and white, with no room for a middle road or third option in between.

How many times a day do you find yourself thinking, feeling or talking about something  as if there must be only one or two possible choices or ways to go?

Examples -

  1. Either I’m a winner or I’m a loser.
  2. I can prove I was right, so that proves you are wrong.
  3. To take care of your needs I have to give up on mine.
  4. If you can’t be open and spontaneous (like me) then you are inhibited.
  5. I only have two choices, fight or give up...    (Punishment/Reward)    Places conditions on Love...and Unconsciousness only offers Two ways to Love...?

Let me explain... To me, it’s the difference between a loving person...and someone who 'Acts' Loving.    Is there a difference?  YES!               Which one are you?

In order to be a truly loving person you must

 Love Yourself first without condition.

Can you do that?

Unconsciousness Vs Self Realization

Projection blaming ones faults onto another (while being unaware).

Projection...reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires...without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

nconsciousness leads to the textbook discription of most Personality Disorders called 'projection'.

Another tactic that many parents used to motivate us, Competition.

                                   The Great Competition...?

By our parents, coaches, teachers (and others) comparing us to others, we learn to be motivated (and motivate ourselves) by what others do, have done/not done…as adults.

Conditioning through Competition can play a role in this process of...

 Creating OUR False Identity.

Note: There is really NO Competition…on a deeper level…

Yet…with Competition…

...there is ALMOST ALWAYS an element of others Controlling us

Carl Rogers

   one of the

Founding Fathers of PSYCHOLOGY

Carl Rogers (January 8, 1902 – February 4, 1987) was an influential American psychologist and among the founders of the humanistic approach to psychology. Rogers is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy research and was honored for his pioneering research with the Award for distinguished Scientific Contributions by the American Psychological Association in 1956).(6)

Conditional verses Unconditional (love)Positive Regard is…

Our Un-resolved Issues...

Are created though Conditions on Love...

Those raised in an environment of unconditional positive regard (non-judgment, freedom of expression, human equality, unconditional love) have the opportunity to fully actualize themselves.

Those raised in an environment of conditional positive regard only feel worthy if they match conditions (what Rogers describes as conditions of worth) that have been laid down by others…

For most of us our 'condtions of worth' come from others.

So…Why do we do...what we do?

For most of us it’s to meet our biological and physiological needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, etc.

Take a look at Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs Pyramid…and you will see what I mean...

Abraham Harold Maslow (April 1, 1908 – June 8, 1970) was an American psychologist. He is noted for his conceptualization of a "hierarchy of human needs", and is considered the founder of humanistic psychology. Humanistic Psychologists believe that every person has a strong desire to realize his or her full potential, to reach a level of Self-actualization. To prove that humans are not simply blindly reacting to situations, but trying to accomplish something greater, Maslow studied mentally healthy individuals instead of people with serious psychological issues. This enabled him to discover that people experience “peak experiences", high points in life when the individual is in harmony with himself and his surroundings. Self-actualized people can have many peak experiences throughout a day while others have those experiences less frequently. (The Developing Person through the Life Span, (1983) pg. 43)

                                               Notice that...

...punishment and reward Motives

lock us into “Physiological and Safety”

...the bottom of the Pyramid.

It's no wonder that,

...Nazi concentration camps, torture, brain washing techniques etc. practice True Behaviorism…

Can you see how many of us as kids practiced (through conditioning)allowing others to have control over us…over and over and over until as adults we’ve lost our deeper self to punishment, reward, competition, subliminal and other subtle and not so subtle way that others control us?

Is it any wonder that some of us as Teens rebel from authority? Some of us as Children/Teens KNEW this on a deeper intrinsic level…

 I was a Teen rebel…How about you?

Looking back at my childhood and Teen years (with an adult perspective)…For me…I can see now that I was after Self-Realization for my Child/Teen self…no longer to be motivated by punishments and rewards as my motives!

I wanted to go deeper…find myself…to remove the controls others had over me and to make choices for myself…on a deeper intrinsic level.

Or…maybe you followed every Rule...

…to find yourself through obedience…either way punishment or reward has serious consequences…

Which brings us to…How Do We Self-Realize??

 The Father of

American Psychology

Harvard Psychologist

Dr. William James…

 Believed that…

“The Greatest Discovery of the 19th Century was not in the realm of the physical sciences, but the power of the subconscious mind touched by faith. Any individual can tap into an eternal reservoir of power that will enable them to overcome any problem that may arise. All weaknesses can be overcome, bodily healing, financial independence, spiritual awakening, and prosperity beyond your wildest dreams. This is the superstructure of happiness.”

Do you see what I See in his statement?

The REAL REASON is locked in your Unconscious Mind…your subconscious is

...THE Grand KEY…

So what happened...

“SUB-CONSIOUSLY the Child/ Teen in you was programmed to fail"

More accurately, your Child/Teen mind in the past was programmed to react and respond…a certain way.

Your Child/Teen mind…ITS Fight -- Flight or Freeze…
YOUR MIND…in response to your unique childhood experience, has ‘literally’ been programmed to protect you through subconscious programming coming into your conscious mind from your “FIGHT or FLIGHT” Reaction/response (which is in a compartment of your unconscious mind along with other unconscious automated responses like your heart beat, etc.). In once sense you are like a deer in car headlights.

The part of the mind with no morality…because it's Amoral.

Amoral in that your subconscious is unaware of or indifferent to questions of right or wrong.

Your existing LIFE/issues are a direct result of this programming…

…immature, inexperienced subconscious program/programs, accepted in your early childhood/Teen years that support your ‘issues’.

What I know...from My own personal attempts to dominate, control, or overrule my behavior/thinking from this part of the mind with SELF DISCIPLINE or SHEER WIILLPOWER, even with God’s help, didn’t work long term and didn’t create self realization.

They didn’t address my bottom line, subconscious issues…

…and Shame and Guilt don’t work long-term… For children, teens or for adults…

Self-Actualization in Goldstein's Theory

(Kurt Goldstein November 6, 1878 - September 19, 1965 was a German Jewish neurologist and psychiatrist who was a pioneer in modern neuropsychology).

Goldstein defined Self-Actualization as…

…a driving life force that will ultimately lead to maximizing one's abilities and determine the path of one's life (Purpose)…. (9)

Do you know your Purpose?

Man’s search for Meaning/Purpose

starts with

Self Realization

If you don't have's because...

Our TRUE PURPOSE can become ‘Lost’ to our...

False Identify…

PURPOSE is one of the true REWARDS of Self Realization!

…YET…many of us can’t go deeper because we are so busy focused outside our self on looking perfect…

…It’s a catch 22…

It all starts with understanding how your human mind works…then working with this ‘part’ of the mind verse against the mind!

Are you working with your mind or against it?

I recall a statement…what we resist… persists!

And so it is with behaviorism…

Neural pathways and Addiction(10)

When you work against your mind your issues are strengthened (persist) by creating ‘shortcuts’ which are neural pathways from one area of the brain to another.  Shortcuts are designed to retrieve info quickly much like a computer shortcut. The subconscious in the back of the brain our consciousness is in the front. The short cut connects the two minds...

Our Double Mind...

Behaviorism is a double edged sword in this regard...

Controlling behaviors/thinking creates habits…

habits create neural pathways...

Neural pathways basically ‘trap’ many of us into little or no self realization while we focus our attention on changing the outside behaviors which strengthen the short cuts...

 …yet on the outside... Everything...‘Looks Perfect’…

With LITTLE/NO Self Realization…

We identify with 'what we do' as who we are…

 Who are you really???

Self-Realization/discovery is the process that requires us to dig deeply in to our subconscious and keep a sharp eye open for what motivates us and whether our motivations are based upon subconscious reactions or our deeper intrinsic self.

 Subconscious Reaction or Self Realization?

What's Guiding You…

Bottom line…

Do you know what operating system is running you?

1- Our Subconscious strives to keep us ‘SAFE’ in a constant state of discomfort and confusion, yearning for  more money, success, power, sex, food, drugs, popularity, approval, and the list goes on.

2- Our subconscious entrains us to past childhood judgments and beliefs whether or not they are still working for us.

3- Our deeper intrinsic self, however, is the manifestor of ‘who we truly are’ and expresses outwardly our gifts to the world:  the brilliance we are within, our wisdom unfolded through experience, our insights gained, how we love, how generous we are, our clarity, our appreciation, our kindness, optimism and how we show compassion to others.

What I know about you…

YOU ARE…A ‘Being’ of Authenticity…

…all you have to do is Realize yourself!

Self Realization comes from utilizing the gifts of your Mind-Body-Self integrated not separated…

Self Realization is the path of bringing these three parts into alignment with each other.

The message of Self Realization is found in art, literature, movies an music.

For example:

Evanescence (Music Artist) "Bring Me to Life" Lyrics say it all...Self Realization.

How can you see into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home
(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

I hope you've found this information valuable.
